Snow Falling On Cedars is a #1 Best Seller and a wonderful book that threads history within a fiction story. It is in paperback, and new condition.
Set in the 50's, just after WWII, the Americans are still bitter towards their enemy, the Japanese. On the fictional island of San Piedro, a Japanese fisherman, Kazuo Miyamoto is accused of murdering a respected white fisherman, Carl Heine. The odds don't look so good for Kazuo as the whole town wants him convicted and to never see the light of day again solely because of his race. We soon discover that the outcome of the trial is not just based of the prejudice of their time, but stems way back to before the war. It goes from Carl's mother snubbing Kazuo's father of a piece of land he had began paying for before the war, to Hatsue, Kazuo's wife now, who had an affair as a young girl with a white man, Ishmael. Ishmael came back from the war having lost an arm, and is now the town's only paper editor. He is the sole person covering this case, and he soon finds a way to prove Kazuo's innocence. The problem is, Ishmael is still extremely bitter towards Hatsue for rejecting him for Kazuo, so he wages a war inside his own mind as to whether or not he should set an innocent man free.
